5/29/2023 0 Comments Raven Black by Ann Cleeves![]() ![]() My editor and I had decided it would stretch credibility to have more than one series of murders in a place as small as Shetland. When I first started writing Raven Black I thought it would be a stand-alone book. When you began writing the first Shetland book, did you envisage it becoming a series? If so, how did you see the characters developing and did this change as the series progressed? ![]() A reviewer once said that I write Village Noir. In close-knit communities, any tragedy hurts everyone, because there's always a personal connection. ![]() I've always enjoyed traditional detective stories, but Shetland also has the atmosphere and space of Nordic novels, so it gives me the best of both worlds: an enclosed community where everyone knows each other and the kind of bleak beauty that provides a chilling backdrop. I first went to Shetland more than 40 years ago after I dropped out of university and I fell in love with the islands. Why did you decide to set the series in the Shetland Isles, and what do you think is the appeal of crime stories set in close-knit communities? ![]()

"Insightfully and concisely, Grimes ( Bronx Masquerade) traces the stages of grief and healing, through the 26 paired poems of two siblings mourning their older brother, Jaron.Jesse, "too young" to go to the funeral, expresses loss in raw terms his poems always lead the pairings. His sister, Jerilyn, is older than Jesse, but younger than Jaron, she tends to hide her hurt.Anyone who has experienced loss will recognize the gamut of emotions Grimes lays out here. ![]() There are teaching guides available for this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() Meanwhile, Willie is jailed for defending himself against a group of white men, and subsequently he has a leg amputated after being placed in irons for trying to break jail. No one but Meggie had ever done it before, not Orpheus, not Darius, not Mo. He had read Dustfinger home, but he couldn’t read himself into the book, right into it. ![]() But this time she wouldn’t have to slip into the skin of a character in the story – no, this time she would be in the story herself, part of it. ![]() She really had slipped through the words, as she’d so often done in her mind. I can do it! That was Meggie’s first thought when she sensed that the letters on the page really had let her through and she wasn’t in Elinor’s house any more, but somewhere very, very different. Shadows danced on a nearby pool, and a swarm of tiny red elves was whirring above the dark water. Sunlight filtered through countless leaves. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean![]() He suffered occasionally from eczema, especially in winter. The books she ate, the booze kept her sane, and the lotion was for Cai, her son. These days, Devon only bought three things from the shops: books, booze, and Sensitive Care skin cream. That intrigue (further deepened by the excellent US cover, with art by paper and book artist Su Blackwell) was amply repaid just in the book’s first paragraph, one of the strongest I’ve read in recent SFF: ![]() A young book eater woman undertakes a desperate, violent quest to find a way to preserve her young mind eater son from a fate decreed by the six book eater Families of Britain: death, or servitude as a “dragon,” the enforcers of the book eater militia known as the knights. ![]() I was intrigued as soon as I read the description for The Book Eaters, Sunyi Dean’s debut novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() There were no action-packed chase scenes, no thrilling fights that Maximum Ride used to always be full of. This book was boring, full of lecturing global warming yapper (all of which I already KNOW) and lacking any adventure. I declare the Maximum Ride series as now officially RUINED. James Patterson seems to have a talent for making every next book in this series worse than the one before. ![]() (The only good thing about THE FINAL WARNING? Total's "I prefer canine-American" comment, which made me laugh until I cried.)Įew. No, what really ticks me off is that it seems as if he decided, with the current state of affairs, to change the whole point of the books at the very last minute, as a way to promote his cause. But if this had been his plan all along, you have to think that there would have been SOME advance warning. We knew it would be big, and no doubt unbelievable, as most of Mr. ![]() If you go back and read the series from the beginning, starting with THE ANGEL EXPERIMENT, we all knew that Max and the gang had a special mission, a mission that would save the world. ![]() The problem, as I see it, is there was NO WAY he started writing this series with a plan to make Max's "saving the world mission" one that had anything to do with this topic. My problem with the story wasn't so much that James Patterson used it as a soapbox for global warming - after all, it's his book, and he can do what he wants. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Vengeful schwab![]() I love it when an author can take an exhausted topic and breathe new life into it. She creates such interesting, well-rounded characters, and draws out the tension so perfectly that I need to know what happens next. And yet, for me, Schwab makes this book stand out from the pile. I've read countless books about people with X-Men like powers. The bare bones of the story is not that original. These "villains" are actually complex antiheroes - murderous and power-hungry, for sure, but also sympathetic and even likeable. ![]() While I've enjoyed a number of Schwab's books, I feel like her strongest writing and characters lie here with Victor and Eli. This duology (series?) is called "Villains" and yet the characters are so much more interesting than that. Oh, how I loved this book! I've waited five long years for the sequel to Vicious and I was starting to think it would never happen. Run, thought Victor, and he could see the response in Eli’s coiled frame. His eyes met Victor’s, and for a second neither man moved. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments The happiness project com![]() ![]() Apart from diagnosing and educating patients and clients on mental health, we also empower them to create the pathways that are central to model of hope.
